HOLLYOAKS - Brave move for Patrick's exit

Hollyoaks have never shied away from hard-hitting, emotive plots, and Patrick Blake has been the centre of many since he first arrived in the village.

He's been the monster father and the monster partner, but Patrick is hiding a secret illness which he will soon succumb to - motor neurone disease.

Next month, Patrick will confide in Theresa McQueen that he has the same disease which killed his father. We've seen him threaten Dr S'avage, after collapsing, when he wanted to look in to Patrick's family history,
Patrick has also had what looks like leg cramps, which has been picked up on by both Maxine and his granddaughter, Nico.

To avoid threatening his chances of securing custody of he and Maxine's baby daughter Minnie, Patrick wants to keep his suspicions quiet, as he comes to terms with recognising the signs of the disease. However, he will find it increasingly difficult to keep his secret as the storyline progresses.

I think this will be an interesting and emotional story to watch, as no soap, from what I remember has tackled motor neurone disease, which is a fatal and rapidly progressive disorder that affects the brain and spinal cord. It attacks the nerves that control movement and can leave people locked in a failing body - unable to move, talk, and eventually, breathe.

Seeing a character like Patrick, who's constantly in need of being in control, come face to face with it will bring a range of different emotions.
Patrick is dislike by many, because of his treatment of his family and Maxine. He's done some unforgivable things, but I can see us viewers also feeling for him as he tries to fight his last battle.

We don't know yet how Patrick does eventually die, and Oaks bosses aren't saying when he'll depart.

Speaking of the new plot, Jeremy Sheffield, who plays Patrick, said:

"I'm honoured to have been involved in some of the show's biggest storylines over the last couple of years. I hope Patrick's upcoming journey will captivate people's hearts and minds.
For Patrick the idea of not being in control, of relinquishing his power is unthinkable and it will be interesting to see how the man who needs to control everything and everyone in his life copes with something that he cannot influence. Working with the Motor Neurone Disease Association has proved invaluable for researching this role."

Patrick's death will also lead to questions on how his loved - or not so loved - ones will cope, especially his daughter, Sienna, who is about to be released from being sectioned for a second time. We know that poor Si Si has her issues because of her upbringing with Patrick, and his control of her.

Will this tip her over the edge further?

And how will Patrick eventually meet his maker?
